La question taraude les fans de la plus célèbre plate-forme de partage d'images. Pourquoi Flickr s'appelle-t'il "Flickr"? La réponse est enfin donnée dans une interview des deux co-fondateurs, Stewart Butterfield et Caterina Fake, qui relatent les premiers pas de l'aventure:
Ben was saying, "Oh, but it's like, you know, like, kind of like if you see the flickering of the metaverse…" And we're like, "flicker!" We tried to get "flicker" with an e, but the guy who had the Web domain wasn't willing to give it up.

- Flicker: 1 vi (flames, light) danser, (before going out) trembloter, vaciller (...). 3 vt to ~ one's eyelid battre des cils.
- Flickering: adj. qui tremble; dansant, vacillant, clignotant. (dictionnaire Robert & Collins)
