The Société française de photographie (SFP) was founded in 1854, the second oldest photographic society in the world after the English (later Royal) Photographic society. And, as Michel Poivert tells us in the introductory essay of this catalogue, written to accompany the exhibition at the Maison européenne de la photographie celebrating its 150 years, the SFP was an organization that combined «les principes d'une société savante et les ambitions d'une veritable académie.» These principles and ambitions were put in the service of an utopian vision: «la constitution en une discipline d'une pratique encore anarchique». L’Utopie photographique is a testament to those ambitions and a proof of their achievement.
