Dernières acquisitions de la vidéothèque de l'EHESS

La vidéothèque de l'EHESS dispose d'un fonds de plus d'un millier de films documentaires et une centaine de fictions ainsi que d'ouvrages, de revues et catalogues. Ces documents sont consultables sur place en salle 736, 54 bd Raspail, 75006 Paris, les lundi, mardi, mercredi de 14h00 à 18h00, jeudi de 10h00 à 13h00. Faced with the difficult, and slippery, task of trying to define photography’s relationship to the occult, the authors of The Perfect Medium describe, on page 46, the two “divergent approaches” taken to the problem since the 19th century. “In the early 1860s,” they write, “spirit photography had two faces. Like Janus, it was used for both mystification and demystification.” On the one hand, there were the believers, who used photography in a quasi-scientific fashion to “foster belief in the possibility of photographing spirits of the dead.” On the other, there were those who saw the commercial and recreational possibilities of ghost photography. Dressed to thrill, actors transformed themselves into spirits, angels and fairies, enriching the coffers of photographers and publishers and amusing the multitudes in the process.
